Monday Morning Poll: Which Film Will Make The Most Money This Summer?
Filed under: Action, Animation, Comedy, Box Office, Fandom, Family Films, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Monday Morning Poll
It's a new year, a new summer and the studios are gearing up to present us with a fresh crop of blockbusters. Last year at this time, I wrote up a Monday Morning Poll asking you which Summer 2006 film would make the most money at the box office. Ultimately, I went with The Da Vinci Code over Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest -- a rookie mistake, I know, but something in me felt pretty confident. But now I'm back -- a whole year has gone by -- and it's about time for those predictions. So, lets take a look at some of the top contenders (in the order of how I think they'll finish at the box office when it's all said and done):
- Spider-Man 3 -- In this third installment, Peter Parker finally realizes that, as a superhero who constantly saves New York City, he should definitely be able to land someone better looking than Kirsten Dunst. Lots of villains and lots of mind-blowing special effects --coupled with the fact that this could be the last Spidey go-round for Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and Sam Raimi -- should be enough for this web slinger to swing into the summer's top spot.
- Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End -- Though the second Pirates flick went ballistic at the box office last summer, a lot of folks walked away with lukewarm feelings toward the sequel. And while I'm confident a truckload of peeps will show up to see how Disney and director Gore Verbinski wrap up the trilogy, I'm not quite sure it will have what it takes to knock Spidey out of the top spot. There's no doubt in my mind that these flicks will finish one and two at the box office, but it really is a toss-up. Tough call right here; something tells me it will come down to the foreign totals.
- Shrek the Third -- The only reason why I think Shrek will beat out Ratatouille this summer is because it's been a couple years since his last adventure and, well, fans are a bit hungrier for the green ogre. And hey, Justin Timberlake is in it! Do I even need to give you any more reasons?
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix -- Seeing as the seventh and final Potter book will arrive in bookstores one week after Order of the Phoenix hits theaters, I'm pretty sure the entire world will be Potter crazy for those few weeks in July. With nothing that substantial (Bourne, Rush Hour 3 being the exceptions) arriving after Potter, the little wizard should have plenty of time to catch up to the three films mentioned above, and could potentially steal the third spot from Shrek.
- Ratatouille -- As unfortunate as it is to write, I cannot see Pixar (and their confusing title) beating out any of the films mentioned above. Yes, it's Pixar. And yes, it's Brad Bird. But the competition this year is the greatest it's been in quite some time. Though I'm sure the film will be just as entertaining as the rest, it will take a miracle for that rat to climb out of the sewer on top.
So, after reading my predictions, what do you think? Which film will take home the most money at the box office this summer?

I noticed you only chose "family" films, but what about Transformers? I think that has potential to hit #3, if for no other reason than it's a summer movie blockbuster that looks like the CGI is awesome (better than Spidey's judging from trailers alone).

I think your right about PoTC 3, I keep thinking back to what happened to the second Tomb Raider, and wonder if the same thing is going to happen. For that matter where is the promotion for the film? Spider Man 3 is already promoting itself!

While I do have high hopes for Transformers, I'm guessing it would be in the top 10 but not the top 5. Michael Bay's last big grosser was "Bad Boys II" which only made $138 million (US). To put that into perspective "Wild Hogs" has already pulled in $145 million (US).

Of those movies I'm thinking Potter will do the best. Followed by Spiderman. Then Shrek - I still don't get Shrek, that's okay. Then Pirates. All sequels. Thank you guys for giving us what we want. If they're all great movies then they'll all make a mint.
I think the Transformers should be on that list as well. Also the Fantastic Four movie. Transformers top five, FF top ten. Folks are hoping they are good movies. I hope they're good. Right now Transformers is on my gotta see list and FF is one more good trailer from being there as well. The bomb in that list is the Rat movie. It's rats and it's got a French name. You know, most folks will find too many other good family oriented movies out to try to decipher what the heck that movie is about. I know the trailer for it passed in front of my eyes a time or two but it left no impression on me. You might as well put the Bourne movie on that list in the top ten cause it's a sequal, folks have seen and like the other two on dvd and it doesn't need critics to mention it's existence. It's on my gotta see list.

It's got to come down to either Spidy 3 or Shrek 3. They've both been setting records with their previous installments.
Harry Potter will do well, but each Potter film has has progessively done less well than the previous.
Pirates I'm sure lost some movie-goers after the last one, though I think Pirates 3 looks like it will be far better than the first two (I didn't even care for those that much.)
Ratatouille is a newcomer in a summer of blockbuster sequels. I don't think it will perform amazingly. It's advertised as just another CG fun family film, and people have been getting too much of that recently.

I think Harry Potter will be make the most money, followed closely by Pirates of the Caribbean.
However, I find that personally I like the Harry Potter's movies less and less. They just can adequately portray all that goes on in the books.
I am impressed with the slate of movies this summer. And although these won't break any box office records, I think that there's a good number of family movies (http://redlightnaps.wordpress.com/2007/04/07/summer-movies-for-the-family/) out there this summer.

You can't criticize for choosing family films to be tops at the box office. For every little kid out there who wants to see a movie, a parent usually has to take them. That's two tickets right there when only one person wants to see the movie. Transformer definitely will not be in the top five because it only appeals to so many people.
The fifth Harry Potter may do better than Shrek the Third because Goblet of Fire did better at the box office than HP2 and HP3 and it probably got a lot of people interested in the series. Not to mention, I think Shrek may have lost some of its audience because the last one was bad.
As for Spiderman 3, it will have a higher opening weekend than Pirates but in the end, PotC will be number 1.

Which one am I most excited about? "Ratatouille". Which one is bound to rake in the most money? I'd say "Spider-Man 3". "Shrek the Third" will likely do well, but I think people are beginning to realize that DreamWorks just keeps on bombarding its films with pop culture jokes that are, at least to me, detrimental to its movies. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" will likewise do well, I think, but the fact that "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" (which is a masterpiece, in my opinion) gained more money than "Goblet of Fire" did in 2005 is somewhat of a sign that the "Harry Potter" touch is fading away (Honestly, I haven't seen a single "Harry Potter" film, but I'm certainly planning to watch at least one just out of curiosity). "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" will also likely do well (okay, they will all most likely do well), but I think "Dead Man's Chest" disappointed some people, including myself (POTC: DMC was good, but certainly not as great as the first POTC movie), and the disappointment is probably still fresh in some people's minds. "Spider-Man 3", on the other hand, will rake in the most money (I think), considering that they haven't released a "Spider-Man" film in quite some time now, and a lot of people lauded the second film in the series.
As I said, "Ratatouille" is the one that I'm most excited about, because Pixar, in my opinion, has NOT made a movie that is NOT a masterpiece (and yes, I consider "Cars" a masterpiece - it was absolutely brilliant, despite being Pixar's "least best" effort, IMHO). I don't think it will be a bomb in the box office, contrary to what another person said, but more likely than not, it won't do as well as the other films in the list. (I don't know if "Ratatouille" will be a good movie or not, but I just want to say this: it's unfortunate that people are crowding movies based on "unfounded hype" these days instead of quality, at least according to my observations. Of course, it's understandable, but unfortunate nonetheless. I'm not saying that the other films in that list are all hype and no-quality (which is basically how I define "unfounded hype"), by the way - I'm basing this statement on PAST observations. Also, call me crazy, because I know that pretty much no one would agree with me, but ALL six "Star Wars" movies are examples of films that have hype AND quality - they are, after all, my favourite movies of all time. Again, call me really crazy, but that's just my opinion :) )
In the end, it's really the quality of the movie that counts, and indeed, I'm hoping that all five of these films will be qualitative (it doesn't really make much sense to actually "want" a movie to be bad, unless you're a fan of the infamous director Ed Wood ;) ). I only look at the box office to satisfy the number geek inside me ;)

Well, I personally think that “Shrek 2” was just an okay movie, but opinions are not facts. Please don’t take this personally – I just get a little irritated when people don’t say “in my opinion” or anything to that effect when stating opinions. I’m sure this isn’t the context that you intended your statement to have, but it’s just a little pet peeve of mine. Anyway, don’t mind this particular part of my post – I just wanted to let that out… :) I didn’t mean to offend, but I apologize if I sounded as though I did. Heck, I’ve probably forgotten to say “in my opinion” several times before. Anyway, I better stop babbling – this post is becoming unbelievably long, which probably means that I need to get a life ;)

Isn't everyone forgetting "Live Free or Die Hard"? I know promotion for the movie seemed to come out of nowhere only a month or so ago, but I think a fourth installment in the Die Hard franchise will scrounge up some pretty good numbers. Plus, it looks like it will be a quality sequel, and in a world where sequels seem to be getting better and better, I think that adds up to a pretty successful movie.. at least the top five in my opinion. As for the rest, I think Spiderman 3 will top the list, with Pirates and Potter right behind in the second and third spot(not sure which will be which, however), and Die Hard and Shrek at 4 and 5.

I think that Harry Potter will be in one of the top three spots. Spider-Man and Pirates will be in the top spots with Harry. I only like Harry out of the three, but I don't know how he will do. Personally, I think all the Potter movies did good. {Daniel Radcliffe was so cute in the fourth movie ;)} Teenage girls might not go to the fifth movie, because he cut all of his hair, but again I'm not sure. That might hurt the movie if teenage girls don't drag their boyfriends along to see it with them. I will still see the movie, even though he isn't as cute anymore. I heard the second Pirates movie did bad, so they might come in third. Then, again I don't know. Spider-Man and Harry might have to fight for the top spot. We will find out this summer. ;)

Ok. in the eyes of some one like me(big on action & horror films & not intrested in family films.), Spiderman 3 & Transformers would take top spots. Spiderman 1 & 2 were both said to be "movie of the year" movies, & #3 will definitly kik some ass. (especially because of venom.)
Transformers also looks kik ass from the trailer & it has amazing effects. & like spiderman, transformers has been around for a long time & alot of childrens parents(young parents 4 transformers) actually grew up watching transformers & spiderman(i did 2), & the live action versions will be the shit.
not so sure bout harry potter tho. iv read a couple of the books(kinda nerdy i know.) but lost intrest around the 5th book(3rd actually). but like they said, Harry Potter Movies hav jus been getting shittier & shittier. Evn the diehard fans can admit to that. but itll do good too.(not as good as transformers & SM3 though)

both spidey and pirates will be close, but i think pirates will win in the end because of all the records it broke and becoming only the 3rd movie of all time to reach the billion $$$ mark, plus the 2nd movie really wasnt all that bad. i was, HOWEVER, disappointed in spidey 2
