Michael Moore Smacks Wolf Blitzer Around on 'SICKO,' the War, and Why CNN Sucks
Filed under: Documentary, Independent, Celebrities and Controversy, The Weinstein Co., Michael Moore, Cinematical Indie
Oh, boy. This is the best thing I've woken up to in a long time. For the first time in three years, Michael Moore appeared on CNN, ostensibly to talk about his film SICKO. Unfortunately for Blitzer, someone at CNN decided to precede Blitzer's interview with a little piece titled "SICKO Reality Check" by Dr. Sanjay Gupta (who is, I expect, now at the top of Moore's "People I Hate" list), which didn't exactly get things off on a good note. After Gupta's "analysis" of Moore's facts, somebody took the leash off Moore, who was on standby -- and then, as they say, the deluge.
Poor Blitzer, he never stood a chance.
It's interesting, too, that once Moore really gets going laying into Blitzer about Gupta, accusing him of being dead-wrong in his report (right about the 8:24 mark), the little blurb beneath Moore changes to "Moore Accused of Fudging Some Facts in SICKO." Uh, how about a blurb reading "And Now We Watch as Moore Smacks Blitzer Up One Side and Down the Other" -- that blurb is exactly the kind of biased "crap" (you just know that's not the word Moore really wanted to use) in the guise of impartiality that Moore is talking about from CNN, and I have to wonder if anyone there at CNN headquarters even appreciated the irony of that.
To his credit, Blitzer does finally manage to get a word in edgewise, and when he does, he distracts Moore from his rant by asking which presidential candidate Moore supports on the health care issue. As a journalistic technique, that's a bit like distracting a rabid dog from killing you by tossing a piece of steak so you can get away before he goes for the kill -- but it does get Moore talking about health care again. Blitzer succeeds in further redirecting Moore's latent rage by showing him a brief clip of Rudy Guiliani at a debate of the Republican candidates. It takes Moore all of about four seconds for Moore to lambast Guiliani as being against the Medicare and the senior citizens of the country -- and Blitzer gets a bit of a breather.
As Moore promised Blitzer during his rant against Gupta, it didn't take long for Moore and his minions to post a bunch of facts on the SICKO website to counter the facts Gupta asserted in his piece. Moore's team goes toe-to-toe with CNN's facts on everything from the US versus Cuba on health care to outright accusing CNN of libel:
"But no matter how much Moore fudged the facts, and he did fudge some facts..."
- This is libel. There is not a single fact that is "fudged" in the film. No one has proven a single fact in the film wrong. We expect CNN to correct their mistakes on the air and to apologize to their viewers.

Funny, when I saw this clip earlier, I was thinking as to how completely absurd Moore sounded. "Oh, people are tearing apart my movie, it MUST be due to the pharmaceutical ads, so let's talk about my other factually flawed movie instead, maybe I can make you look bad."
Ugh, Moore's horrid.

Umm, no. Mike is a hero. The point of bringing up F911 was to give yet another example of how the mainstream media vilifies truth tellers and then never bothers to apologize or correct its behavior when they are proven wrong. Look at the facts. Remember the facts?

The DR. Gupta hit piece is the one fudging the facts here. The truth is on the side of the American people, and so is Michael Moore.
In this case, it is CNN that is horrid.

I thought Mike was great. It will be interesting to see Mike and the Dr. Sanjay Gupta debate on Larry King today. It's too bad many simply decide to be critical of Michael Moore rather than have to discuss the issues he raises in pursuit of common ground.

How come no one wants to mention the most OBVIOUS point, that if you are obese ( like Michael Moore ) than you will bring on many preventable diseases like diabetees. why should the government pay for fat asses like Michael Moore who eat themselves into sickness? A significant majority of illnesses are preventalbe, wash your hands, eat healthy, excercise, go vegetarian. Michael Moore is the worst person to be talking about this issue.

Moore has lost weight and has mentioned how he's dieting, exercising to get into healthy shape.
As for the story, amusing. Funny how the host mentions ads run for sicko on CNN. Those are paid for, genius. Weinstein Co. has far less cash for advertising than all the big pharma/insurance companies.

Sounds like Moore wanted to get on just to blast CNN. There was nothing in that lead-in story that was negative about Sicko, in fact the doctor/reporter agreed with him. So really whats his beef?
There is no such thing as "free and universal" health care. The other countries just pay into a big pool out of their paychecks and taxes that everyone gets to dip into. So if you NEVER get sick and never need it you end up paying for someone who doesn't bother to take care of themselves.
What does CNN advertising and show titles have to do with Blitzer a cnn employee who probably has zero influence on what Turner Communications sells as ad space? Michael Moore is a tool, he completely sees one side of every story he makes a movie about and refuses to acknowledge opposing view points. When presented with one he always screams foul and assumes people are out to get him.

hey david.ray, obesity isn't always a choice or the fault of the person. some people simply have the genetics that cause them to be overweight no matter how much they diet properly or exercise and others have pretty much the opposite.
i have friends who would love to be my weight but no amount of work they can do will make it happen.
when you make generalizations about people being slothful gluttons based on their weight, and put everyone overweight in that category... it's obvious that facts aren't really that important to your viewpoint.

I mention this because I am a soldier in the US Army, during basic training we had a batalion of over 300 people, there was a good 20 people marked as obese after a brutal summer training period there was not a single obese or overweight person in the batalion. I agree for some it is "harder" for some to lose weight, and I am sure there is a small contigent that have legitamite medical problems, but the vast vast majority of obesity in America is preventable.

CNN: "But no matter how much Moore fudged the facts, and he did fudge some facts…"
MOORE: This is libel. There is not a single fact that is "fudged" in the film.
Nor were there "fudged" facts in Gupta's report, but there misrepresentations a-plenty, of the sort Moore is renowned for. Both the film and the report supplied facts, but both shamelessly misrepresented the implications of those facts.
Clearly, both Gupta ("Journalist") and Moore ("Documentarian") only feel compelled to share the few select facts that support their precariously narrow views of a monumentally complex issue. Had this confrontation not been forced, we would have been left to reconcile two incompatible and incomplete representations of the truth.
However, credit is due to Moore for addressing Gupta's claims directly by filling in the blanks with the data Gupta conveniently left out, rather than telling us a new story with even more blanks and a pen to fill them in ourselves.
If I wanted to play Mad-Libs with a couple of self-righteous know-it-alls, I'd go back to second grade. It's a sad day for journalism.

#8 - "So if you NEVER get sick and never need it you end up paying for someone who doesn't bother to take care of themselves." Someone who doesn't "bother to take care of themselves"??? What about cancer? What about losing fingers and toes due to accidents? What about brain tumors? Can you seriously say that people who suffer from these types of things are not taking care of themselves? I am an American living in Canada and I am constantly appalled by many Americans' attitudes about having *their* taxes pay for the medical services needed by poorer people. At least in Canada, no one has to worry about going bankrupt because of medical treatment, no matter how extensive.

#13 yeah you may not have to worry about going bankrupt because of medical treatment but you might just die in the waiting room because of the long waits. I would rather PAY for what I use as opposed to paying yet another tax. Those people that truly cannot afford it here in the US get the medical care just like every other country. Doctors took an oath and the hospital has to treat you no matter what your economic situation. Yeah stuff happens even to the best of us, but at the end of the day that is rare and those rare circumstances do get taken care of by grants, donations, and other good people if you cannot afford it.
Moore purposely choose Cuba because he knew it would cause controversy. He purposely chooses everything he puts in his movies because that is the only way he can make money. He is just like an ambulance chasing lawyer, he feeds and strives off conflict. He is no saint nor does he give a rats ass about the poor or the oppressed.

Any one who saw Sicko and didn't walk away feeling ashamed to be living in a country that spends more money on war then helping it's own citizens is either disturbed or rich and insured! What is wrong with this country? I am a hard working American that has been un insured for almost 2 years. I pray every day that I won't get sick and need health care. What is wrong with this country? OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE! Don't worry about political sides, worry about the issue! EVERYONE HAS A RIGHT TO HEALTH CARE!!!!!

#14 - You are operating under a misconception. The waiting time is NOT STATISTICALLY LONGER in Canada or the UK than in the US - a few non-emergency procedures excluded. Please quite spreading lies and debate on the facts.
And Moore went to Cuba to help make a good movie and to really nail home his point. Of course he cares about the poor and those who can't afford health care. Have you actually seen any of his movies? They are very moving. Quit attacking him personally just because you're unable to attack the facts. It's disgusting.

I know this isn’t the right blog for this, but I feel factual reality is sometimes missing, and the conservatives love to spout their b/s as fact. Rather than argue, I prefer to look up the facts. Here are some of them:

What is the real solution, if Michael Moore’s government sponsored universal health care is not the answer?
The crux of the "SICKO" documentary is the disconnect between our expectations and the reality of health care. We are expecting compassionate care from another human being, and instead we get a faceless corporation. The person behind the desk or window is an agent of a health care corporation, which is not a human being, whose primary goal is to increase corporate profit.
This is America, and corporate profit is good, the profit motive forming the basis America’s greatness. The basic problem is that a corporation is not a human being. Therein lies the fallacy of replacing a corporation with a government agency, neither of which is a human being, when what we really want is a human being to deliver compassionate health care, and assist in serious health care decisions.
Ultimately we must at some point ration health care to avoid national bancruptcy. We can't provide everything for everybody. Moore's film, SICKO replaces the corporate health company with the government agency as the agent of this care rationing.
My major point here, is that the larger issue which is ignored by the SICKO film, is the control of medical information, which then determines expenditure and rationing patterns. The control of medical information controls the money. This is explained fully at:
